K12 Network Finalized and Approved

Per an email from Travis Willard:  "The State Board approved a new contract for our statewide K-12 network. The contract is again with AT&T and will allow us to double your bandwidth to 3.0 Mbps for each school for the 2009-2010 school year at the same cost of the previous contract. In addition to doubling your bandwidth, districts will also be able to purchase additional bandwidth (and other services) from AT&T by referencing the State contract on the 470 filing process, when the next E-rate cycle opens this fall. I again want to thank our Infrastructure Technology Steering Committee lead by Wallace Reeves for guiding us through this process."

K12 Network Update

If anyone would like to see the progess of the upgraded bandwithd DOE is working to provide then check out http://ssl.doas.state.ga.us/PRSapp/PublicBidNotice?bid_op=094140041400-652-0000000992.  If there are no more vendor protests then AT&T will continue to be the service provider and the speed of the K12 Network will be doubled from 1.5M / school to 3M / school.  In addition to that, school systems will be able to purchase additional bandwidth through the state's contract.  One system that is in the know about the pricing told me that they would see about a 90% cost savings by using this contract as opposed to going with what had been offered to them via an RFP they had out.
